The People and Planet 5 Survey

Use our five survey items to start measuring the voice of the employee for environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards.

Overview

Ensure your ESG reporting includes the voice of the employee.

For over two decades, Gallup analysts have studied 100 million records of employee data, as well as reports, research papers, and interviews with board members, executives, managers, and individual contributors. Along the way, we've learned two important things:

  1. Corporate culture plays a major role not only in driving profitability and raising morale but also in the effectiveness of safety, training, compliance and diversity programs.
  2. When organizations experience ethical issues and scandals, employees are the first to know -- long before leaders find out.

In short, if your external communications say your organization is doing great things for the environment, but your employees strongly disagree, something is not working. Recent corporate scandals have proven that major ethical, social and environmental risks can hide behind "good news."

Current discussions about reporting standards have focused on financial and accounting variables such as diversity, pay equality, wage levels, health and safety statistics, and employee training. While these are essential standards, nonfinancial, subjective cultural elements are missing.

Solution

Take action by asking your employees to rate these five survey items.

Examining data from several hundred items in Gallup's database aimed at the most important ESG content areas, Gallup has identified five survey items that are highly predictive of future behaviors and business outcomes.

These five items:

  • are proven to be predictive of positive organizational outcomes, including ESG
  • are written by Gallup experts and scientifically validated
  • allow for global benchmarking

These items, collectively known as the People and Planet 5 survey, are our gift to the world. We recommend that all organizations add these items to their current employee surveys, regardless of the platform they currently use.

How to Deploy and Benchmark the People and Planet 5 Survey

Gallup urges all organizations to begin asking their employees these questions. Use the exact survey items and scales as shown below when deploying the survey. Organizations can add them to any employee survey on any platform.

The 5 Survey Items:

If I raised a concern about ethics and integrity, I am confident my employer would do what is right.

At work, I am treated with respect.

There is someone at work who encourages my development.

My organization cares about my overall wellbeing.

My organization makes a positive impact on people and the planet.

Translated versions of each item can be found here.

Compare your organization's percentage of "strongly agree" responses (those who rate the item a "5" on a five-point scale) with Gallup's database of other organizations -- the 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles are posted below each item.
